WoundedInIraq.org is a non-partisan collection of information
pertaining to the number of casualties incurred during the current
conflicts along with the actual stories and faces behind those figures.
As WoundedInIraq.org grows we'll be featuring a statistical report
in this space detailing such things as the total number of stories
entered, locations, and more.
Your participation in this living, on-going, historical analysis
would be greatly appreciated.
We
were inspired to do more than be extra courteous to the veterans
we meet at our places of employment and donations to local veteran
groups by the photo shown
here.
Posted in a September 7th 2007 story at the HuffingtonPost.com by
blogger Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, this iconic photo of Marine Staff Sgt.
John Johns (taken by Mr. Greenfield-Sanders) says more than any mere words
can convey.
Service, courage, perseverance are just a few of the thoughts that cross our
minds when we take in this photo. It occurs to us there are many, many
more service members fighting the same fight. They are not statistics
on a page, stick figures on a chart, or pieces to be played on a political
checker board.
They are living, breathing, human beings who've made a tremendous sacrifice
on our behalf (sometimes more than once). They've earned the right to
proudly show their faces and have their stories known. We hope that
they, their families, friends, and neighbors agree and will tell their stories
here... for the record.
WoundedInIraq.org,
is dedicated to honoring the men and women who have served and are serving
our country during the current conflicts in the middle east.
By creating this site we hope of offer each and every veteran from 2000 and
on the opportunity to tell their story directly and have it publicly acknowledged.
Family, friends, active duty personnel, veterans, as well as other community
organizations and media outlets are also encouraged to speak on behalf of
those unable or unwilling to do so themselves.
In addition, because some families have had members wounded while working
for the private sector in theater, we've also provided an opportunity for
them to receive some recognition for the sacrifice they've made for their
families and country as well.
